Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu GmbH is a Munich brewery with more than six centuries of history, one of Germany's oldest and a symbol of Bavarian brewing.
The brewery's history dates back to 1397. Spaten means 'spade', a symbol of craft and hard work. In the 19th century it became one of Munich's early adopters of steam-powered brewing and began exporting beyond Germany. Spaten also helped popularise Helles Lager, the pale Munich lager that became a German brewing classic.
In 1922, Spaten merged with another Munich brewery, Franziskaner-Leist-Bräu, known for its traditional Weissbier wheat beers. The resulting Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu GmbH brought together Spaten's malt-led brewing approach and Franziskaner's softer, aromatic character.
The brewery is part of the international AB InBev group but continues to brew in Munich using traditional recipes and retaining its distinctive taste.
The Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu range includes traditional lagers and Helles beers, such as Spaten Münchner Hell and Spaten Oktoberfestbier, alongside Franziskaner Weissbier wheat beers with characteristic banana, clove and fresh-bread aromas.
Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu represents the history, traditions and craftsmanship of German brewers and is recognised worldwide.
