Founded: 1895
Budějovický Budvar is the Czech national brewery and one of Europe's best-known beer brands. Founded in 1895 in České Budějovice, also known as Budweis, it continues the region's brewing traditions, which date back to the 13th century.
Budějovický Budvar remains committed to the classic Bohemian lager style, Czech Premium Lager. It uses Czech Žatec, or Saaz, hops, Moravian barley malt and artesian water from its own wells more than 300 metres deep. These ingredients contribute to Budvar's full flavour, gentle hop bitterness and distinctive aroma.
Budějovický Budvar is also known for a long fermentation and maturation process of around 90 days, which gives the beer its fullness, smoothness and balanced flavour.
The company is wholly owned by the Czech state and operates as an official national enterprise, n. p., maintaining its brewing traditions and independence from international corporations.
Budvar is also known for its long-running dispute with the American company Anheuser-Busch over the Budweiser name, and is closely associated with authentic Czech lager.
Budějovický Budvar exports to more than 70 countries, representing Czech brewing traditions and craftsmanship.
